I love Autumn! I love the change from being hot and sticky, lying on a beach sweltering, showering 3 times a day to stay cool and wearing thin clothing that does nothing to hide the bits I don’t want seen, to the Fall opportunities in clothing, make-up and shoes!
At last … the leaves are turning to red, orange, and gold; they lie about in crunchy piles or sodden mounds. For us, we’re back to layering and chunky sweaters; spicy chai latte and the occasional blast of a cool breeze across the face. It’s important, in this season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, to learn how to change your beauty routine. It’s time to transition from summer colours.
The Transition from Summer to Fall
Beauty maintenance is high in summer. The sun fades your hair colour; it dries your skin, which can also become oily from humidity; sunscreen and sweat can cause breakouts. It’s not all it’s cracked up to be … truly!
Autumn/Fall is for matte formulas, rich colours, and a more in-depth skin care routine. Follow these steps and you won’t go wrong …
Change your Moisturiser
Your skin is hydrated or oily from humidity in the summer months; you used a lighter, more sheer moisturiser. Winter brings drier skin, so start preparing now by using a heavier, thicker moisturiser. Pure Biology Anti Aging Night Cream; a Top 10, 5-star moisturiser on Amazon; yes it is a night cream but you do need something heavier now the weather is chillier and the wind is colder which, of course, dries out your skin. If popularity is the key, this one wins hands down.
No matter how careful you were over the summer, you probably have some more skin damage from the sun. If there is a product that repairs discolouration or scarring I still haven’t found it; there are plenty of products that claim they will including the top-rated Organys Glow Brightening Cream. I haven’t tried it so I don’t know if it works, but a lot of people have tried it and had great results.
During the winter months, you may find you are better sticking to oils and oil-based products for your moisturiser, and not creams. Try 100% Organic Blend of Olive, Lavender, Almond & Grapeseed oils with Vitamin E or Sweet Almond Oil These oils are absorbed quickly and keep your face, lips and body moisturised.
Switch your Formula
If you’ve been wearing sparkly make-up, it’s time to go matte; everything from lip products to bronzers to eyeshadow. This is the best time of year to focus on richer, deeper colours and all things matte. Those bright, neon lipsticks and blushers must be matte!
I love Chantecaille! It’s expensive but the products are sensational so it’s worth the pain. They make great eye pencils like this Chantecaille luster glide silk infused eye liner ; Violet Damask; smooth and lustrous and really lasts … Or why not try Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner with Sharpener ; some great colours!
Take Care of your Lips
As the months get colder make sure you’re exfoliating your lips. There is little point in using your fave lip balm if the skin you’re hydrating isn’t healthy to begin with. Gently exfoliate your lips using something like Maui Sugar Lip Scrub with Kukui Nut Oil a couple of times a week, and apply Vaseline or a balm.
Take Care of your Hair
Drying your hair in the summer isn’t a big deal; in fact we often go out with damp hair. But in Autumn, as we head into winter, we blow dry and style our hair with excessive daily heat, damaging and drying the hair faster. Make sure you’re hydrating your hair with a certified organic product like Pure Moroccan Silk Hydrating Argan Oil or use a hair mask … Coconut Oil Hair Mask Conditioner And why not change pillowcases from cotton to satin to minimise frizz. Sweet Dreams Luxury Satin Pillowcase for Hair. I’ve been using one of these for years!
Ditch your toner
Most toners contain alcohol which is far too drying for your skin. Pair toner with wind chill and you have super dry damaged skin. Or swap your toner for Pure Rose Water Facial Toner by Poppy Austin … no alcohol and organically sourced.
Go for Jewel Tones
A stark contrast to summer brights and neon, jewel-tones are chic and sophisticated. Let’s go vampy! Emerald, Oxblood, Navy, Eggplant, Bronze. Deep, rich colors are back in style and are great for Autumn! Try something like these L’Oréal Paris HiP Studio Secrets in metallics. You’re looking for some sultry depth.
Swap your foundation shade
When your tan wears off (real or fake!),you will need a lighter shade of foundation; but you don’t want to look like a ghost. As you transition into the new season, mix your lighter and darker shades together to get a perfectly matched foundation for your skin tone. When winter arrives, you will be pale and interesting! Some products I always recommend are Revlon ColorStay Makeup For Normal/Dry Skin, CHANEL LIFT LUMIÈRE FIRMING AND SMOOTHING which I use periodically and really like, BOOTS No7 Dual Action Tinted Moisturiser; you cannot go past Boots products which are high quality, inexpensive and work!
What changes do you make to your skin care and make-up as we change seasons? Any suggestions for us? Do you enjoy the change of season?
NOTE: I use or have used or have tried all the products I recommend. If there is a product I have not used, I say so!
